Monday Lunch at CYC

CYC’s Monday Lunch is a luncheon gathering of sailors and others interested in sailing. Once or twice a month we have guest speakers who talk about their racing or cruising experiences, or other topics of interest to the group. We start to gather at 11:30, lunch at 12:00, program or discussion at 12:30. All are welcome. Lunch is available for $15, and the bar is open.

February 18, 2013 – Joel Thornton: Joel Thornton will talk and show pictures from his and Mary’s three months on the canals of France in late summer and early fall of 2012.

Past Speakers:

August 15 – Peter and Hans Schmidt, Marco Shipyard: Peter Schmidt is a CYC Founding Member and long-time CEO of Marco Shipyard, which has operations in Seattle and in Chile.  Peter’s son Hans has for some years had primary responsibility for the company’s Chilean business.  Marco-Chile has recently delivered a newly constructed vessel to a Peruvian client, and Hans gave a presentation about this project.

May 23 – Bob Liston, Blue Water Cruiser:
Bob is a long-time CYC member, having joined the club in 1966. In 2010 Bob, his wife Margaret, and two friends spent most of June in their 40′ sloop cruising the Haida Gwai (formerly know as the Queen Charlotte Islands). Bob talked about planning the cruise, getting permits, and other details of preparation, as well as notable adventures on the cruise, visits to native sites, and the majestic scenery of BC’s northern coastal region.

May 16 – Tom Speer, America’s Cup Designer: Tom is leader of Team Oracle’s design group working on a 72′ catamaran that will be sailed by Team Oracle in defense of the America’s Cup in 2013 on San Francico Bay. Tom is a retired Boeing engineer who joined Oracle upon leaving Boeing. He talked about the design parameters for the 2013 America’s Cup defense, the challenges the design team faces, and some approaches in meeting those challenges. Tom was also involved in design of the AC45 catamaran which is now being sailed in a series of regattas leading up to the Cup competition itself.

May 2 – Charles Fawcett, CYC Member and Former Club Manager: Charles continues his active cruising life with regular trips to the Mediterranean. He brought us up to date on his adventures since the last time he was our speaker two years ago.

February 14- Jim Frazier, CYC Director and Fleet Captain, Thunderbird Fleet: Jim talked about the Thunderbird class, the Seattle fleet, its racing program and its other activities.

January 17 - Jonathan Flack, CYC Board Member: Jonathan was the CYC board member responsible for the club’s Junior Sailing program. The board views this program as vital to the club’s future, with Jonathan leading its implementation. He give us details on what was planned for 2011 and ideas on how Monday Lunch members can be helpful.

January 10, 2011 - Dave Rigby, Marine Plumbing Specialist: Bob Miller recommended Dave Rigby as a speaker. Dave has done work on Bob’s boat on several occasions, always to a good result. Dave’s topic will be “Secrets to a Sweet Smelling Head.” He will give a short talk and then answer any and all questions on the subject.

December 27, 2010 - Herring and Aquavit Lunch: The planning discussion which was originally scheduled for 11/29 was not held that date due to speaker rescheduling caused by the November snowstorm.

December 13 - Paul Bieker, America’s Cup Yacht Designer: Paul was our speaker on two occasions on the subject of the most recent America’s Cup competition. This time he will talk about the next campaign. Golden Gate Yacht Club will defend the cup, with details still in the process of being organized.

December 6 - Brian Watkins: Brian is a CYC member and highly accomplished racer with his Express 37, “Declaration of Independence.” He will talk about his experiences in organizing a successful sailboat racing campaign on Puget Sound.

November 22 - Dale Mobius, Seattle Office, Veterans Administration: Dale will give us an introductory course in veterans benefits, who qualifies for which ones, and how to go about qualifying. This is a rescheduling of the program from October 18.

November 15 - Riley Jones, Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition: Riley will discuss the history, current activities, and future plans for cleaning up the lower Duwamish River, a major Superfund site.

November 8 - Jack Christiansen, North Sails: Jack is a long time CYC member, and past Board member, who operates the North Sails loft in Seattle. He will talk about the latest in sail materials and design.

November 1 - John Adams & John Rehberg, Seattle General Agency: A conversation on the subject of yacht insurance. John Adams has twice in past elections run for WA State Insurance Commissioner.

October 25 - Tammy Allen, Harbormaster, Bainbridge Island. Tammy has been our speaker annually for the past several years, bringing us up to date on developments at the harbors and marinas on Bainbridge Island. This time she will have a special topic–her time spent this summer helping deal with the consequences of the Gulf oil spill.

October 11 - John Rahn, CYC Commodore. John will describe the major issues on CYC’s agenda for the balance of 2010 and on into 2011, the important decisions under review by the board, and challenges in implementing those decisions.

October 4 - Rich Hazelton, Editor, 48 North. Rich has been our speaker every 12 – 18 months for many years. He will bring us up to date on the sailing world as he sees it from his magazine’s editorial chair.

September 27 - Chris Tutmark, Racing Sailor and CYC Member. Chris will talk about competing in this year’s Mini Transat race, along with some of his other ocean racing experiences.

September 20 - Mark Shrader,Skipper, Ocean Watch and the Around the Americas Campaign. Mark was our speaker in May 2009, shortly before the 64-foot cutter “Ocean Watch” sailed on her circumnavigation of North and South America. That voyage was completed successfully on June 17 of this year. Mark will tell us about some of the highlights and lowlights of this historic trip.

September 13 - John Kelly, CYC S1 Member. John joined CYC in January 1946. He will talk about his years as a CYC member, in particular the decision to build the present Shilshole clubhouse and the implementation of that decision.

August 23 - Keith Whittimore, Kvichak Marine. Kvichak Marine has been an important supplier of skimmer boats in the cleanup after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Keith will speak about “The Gulf Oil Spill from the Perspective of Ballard.”.

August 16 - Bob Senter, Lugger Marine Engines. Bob Senter’s company is a manufacturer of marine diesel engines. He was our speaker in May of this year, and at the end of his talk we agreed that later in the summer we would make a field trip to Lugger Marine’s facility in Ballard to see their operations. On this date we will have lunch at CYC and then car pool to Lugger Marine.

August 2 - David Carpenter, Ballard Locks. David is Navigation Facilities Supervisor at the Ballard Locks. He will talk about operations, adventures, and misadventures that he has seen over the years.

July 26 - Dave Reid, Sail Transport Company. Sail Transport Company delivers locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables from Sequim to Seattle, under sail. Dave will give us the details of his company and its operations.

July 19 - Brian Ledbetter, Seattle Racing Sailor. Brian has recently sailed in the Newport-Bermuda Race. He will talk about this experience among others at various regattas in recent years.

July 12 - Speaker tentatively scheduled but not yet confirmed.

July 5 - Independence Day Holiday. No Monday Lunch. The CYC clubhouse will be closed.

June 28 - Dalton Bergin, SYC Member. Dalton is a racing sailor known to many CYC members. He is, in the words of Bill Buchan, “… one of the best young sailors in the world.” He will talk about his racing activities.

June 21 - Steve Wilen, Author and Classic Yacht Association member. Steve is the author of Knee Deep in Shavings, a biography of boat designer and builder Norm Blanchard. Steve will be in Seattle over the Father’s Day weekend for a rendevous of the Classic Yacht Association (CYA) and will come to lunch on Monday to talk about Norm Blanchard and also about CYA.

June 14 - Christine Scott, SmartPlug, Inc. Christine is Marketing Director of SmartPlug, a company that specializes in electrical systems for marine applications. She will tell us about her company and its work.

June 7 - Matt Pollitz, X-Ray Auto. Matt will discuss the conversion of older model Volvo automobiles to electric power.

May 24 - Bob Senter, Lugger Marine Engines. Bob Senter’s company is a manufacturer of marine diesel engines. On this day we will have lunch at CYC and after lunch make a field trip to Lugger Marine’s facility in Ballard to learn the “Fundamentals of Advanced Marine Diesel Engines.”

May 17 - Fred Roswold, Long-Time Offshore Cruiser and CYC Member. Fred and his wife Judy have cruised the world for more than 15 years on their 43-foot sloop “Wings.” They are past recipients of CYC’s Greig Memorial Trophy, our Cruising Boat of the Year award. Fred’s topic will be “Cruising is More Fun if You Like to Sail (CYC Members Make Good Cruisers).”

May 10 - Sharon Briggs, Manager, Recreational Boating, Port of Seattle. Sharon has been our speaker on several occasions in recent years. She always gives us an update on important developments at Shilshole Marina and on other relevant subjects, and will do so again this year.

May 3 - John Rahn, CYC Commodore. John will tell us about some interesting new developments at CYC.

April 26 - Curt Ebbesmeyer Author and Marine Scientist. Curt is the recently published author of Floatsametrics and the Floating World. He has a PhD in Oceanography and is an acknowledged authority on the current state of our world’s oceans.

April 19 - Kurt Hoehne, Marine Journalist, CYC Member and Past Board Member. Kurt will talk about sailing in the Mini Transat race and more generally about the growth of single handed sailing and racing.

April 12 - Fred Pot, CYC Member and Past Board Member. Fred is now applying his expertise in GPS technology to railroad operations. He will describe some of his current activities in “working on the railroad.”

April 5 - Jeff June, Northwest Straits Initiative. Jeff’s organization has made significant progress towards ridding Puget Sound and the Straits of derelict fishing nets, crab pots, and other fishing gear. He will tell us about recent developments and plans for further work.

March 29 - John Ellis, Seattle Mariners Chairman Emeritus & CYC Staff Commodore. John will be back at the beginning of the new baseball season to talk about the Mariners and what we can hope to see from our team in 2010.

March 22 - Chuck Sanborn, CYC Staff Commodore. Chuck will show a video of the northern Norwegian coast, produced from pictures taken on a cruise from Bergen to the Norway-Russia border and return.

March 15 - George Lowe, Author. George is a past CYC member, is one of the early owners and campaigners of a T-Bird, and subsequently owned a Cal-40. George has written the book Tramper which a number of us have read and enjoyed. He will talk with us about whatever happens to be on his mind.

March 8 - Paul Bieker, America’s Cup Yacht Designer. Paul was our speaker two years ago at the early stages of his work in designing a boat for the Oracle BMW team which won the America’s Cup competition in Spain last month. Paul will give us a reprise of this project that had such a successful conclusion.

January 18 - John Rahn, CYC Commodore. John will talk about some of the important issues facing the club in 2010, and special projects or activities that he and the board are planning for the year.
