Leaving San Francisco . . .

We have enjoyed a lengthy stay and great weather in the San Francisco Bay area, but must begin our sojourn south to fit in all the stops along the way that we've identified and make it to San Diego in time for the Ha Ha.

Our agenda in the Bay Area has included many visits with family, since Garth grew up in Palo Alto and all his family is still here. While my family is spread all over, I have a Grandfather here, who took us to the racetrack to see one of his thoroughbred racehorses compete. Fortunately, we've had few boat projects or boat related errands to run, so have had the freedom to explore the bay the best way of all: by boat.

We've truly appreciated the many yacht clubs that have reciprocal privileges with Corinthian. Most have extremely nice facilities and offer a warm welcome and free moorage for a night or so. The reciprocity has certainly helped ease the pressure on our budget and, through the clubs we've met many fun and helpful people. Several generous people have offered use of their cars or a ride to get groceries or to Kinko's for Internet access. Many other boats are also heading south and it really feels like a floating community. Canada is well represented, with many fun loving cruisers serving as ambassadors. We've enjoyed the camaraderie immensely and have shared cruising information, such as where shower and laundry facilities are located, and where to find a hardware store and free Internet access.

We've spent the most time in Sausalito and Tiburon, which are absolutely charming and offer many conveniences for cruisers, and in the Marina district. We watched some of the "Big Boat" sailing regatta at St. Francis Yacht Club and visited some friends who were participating. We hiked around Angel Island and visited some of the East and South Bay areas. We've eaten out a bit, but probably our favorite meal out was at Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon, a beautiful facility on the point, with a breathtaking view of the downtown city front and excellent food.

We've seen many of Garth's tugboats at work on the bay and, while in Redwood City, visited the folks at the Marine Science Institute, who were extremely appreciative clients.

Though we've traveled all over the Bay, there are still so many places we've missed. We've skipped the Delta, which alone might encompass a month. We've been invited to participate in many upcoming events at the yacht clubs and find ourselves tempted, but it's time to 'get along little doggies, get along'.
