Junior Racing Team

The CYC Junior Racing Team welcome junior sailors interested in racing of all skill levels.  While some Race Team members have done  well in racing events of all levels, we also have many members who are learning how to race.  We value enthusiasm and effort, and while we cannot guarantee that all members will have top success, we know that all members of the CYC Junior Race Team who try will become better sailors and racers.  This is our principal focus.

Our practice schedule runs throughout the year, with our 2013 Race Team season running from February 2013 through January 2014.  Under the supervision of Junior Sailing Director Derek Vranizan, we practice on weekends until the weather warms and we gain sunlight with Daylight Savings Time when we will move to a Tuesday-Thursday afternoon schedule. Some members of our team will participate in the CYC Thursday dinghy races (no charge for Junior members). We also will be participating in racing regattas, particularly those in the greater Seattle area in Juiy through October.  We also will participate in special coaching clinics with renowned coaches such as Pablo Webber.

While our team principally centers on the Optimist Dinghy, we welcome older junior sailors concentrating on other dinghies, such as Lasers, Radials and 29ers. Members of the CYC Junior Race Team must practice and race in their own boats and using their own equipment and sails but new members of the race team may rent (subject to availability) Club Optimist dinghies and equipment during their first year of participation, pursuant to an Optimist Rental Agreement and Release. Subject to space being available, Race Team members may store their boats on the CYC float pursuant to a Dinghy Storage Agreement with the Club. Stored boats that are not covered by a Dinghy Storage Agreement will be removed from the float.

Fees are $800 for year, with separate fees for each 3-month period if you do not join for the full year.  Fees cover coaching during practices and regattas but do not include any regatta entrance or related fees, travel expenses or the fees for any special coaching clinics that may be scheduled from time to time. If you are interested in joining, but are not ready to commit to the CYC Junior Race Team immediately, you may attend two practices at no charge;  if you subsequently desire to join the Junior Race Team, then you will receive a $50 credit off the applicable fees.
