Fleet News:

  • 2012 Bacardi Cup/Miami Sailing Week – March 5th – 10th
Two teams from CYC traveled to Coconut Grove in Miami, Florida for the 85th running of the Bacardi Cup. Team “Frolic” comprised of Carl and Jamie Buchan had a very consistent and strong regatta placing 18th overall while Derek DeCouteau and Dave Martin on team “Misty” placed 29th overall in a field of sixty seven competitors.

The first day, Monday was an 18 to 20 knot day with the normal difficult chop in Biscayne Bay. The regatta was scheduled to have one race each day for six days, however, the front that generated tornadoes in Indiana made its way to Florida a few days later so it was too windy on Tuesday and Wednesday to race at all with winds forecast at 30 knots plus. That left the race committee to schedule two races on both Thursday and Friday and then one final race on Saturday.

Thursday the wind had died down to 20 knots but it was still plenty puffy. The RC had us round reaching marks for both races and it was a long day on the water. Friday the wind was more in the 12 to 14 knot range which generated the best results for both “Frolic” and “Misty” with an 11th and a 16th place finish respectively.

Saturday was the lightest air day with great racing and shifty conditions.
