June 9, 2007
On Saturday June 9, a team of Sea Scouts from the Sea Scout Unit sponsored by CYC competed in the annual championship sailing regatta of the Pacific Northwest region of the Sea Scouts for the Kelly Cup. This was a 5 race contest at Sail Sand Point open to all region Sea Scouts and was attended by 6 teams from Portland Origan, Port Townsend and Seattle. It was a typical Northwest race day all clouds and rain but enough wind to finish 5 races for all 6 teams of which our team won three and placed one second and one third. The competition was very close. The CYC team was skippered by Eric Johnson with Greg Hammond as crew using Flying Junior Class boats (FJ's) supplied by the Sail Sand Point organization. In addition to winning the Kelly Cup the team qualified for entering the Koch Cup which is the International Sea Scout Sailing Championship to be held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. next Summer. Sea Scouts from 20 nations will compete in this event. Google "Koch Cup" for details of this event. We want to win that too.
